Michael Babatunde breaks arm after blocking shot from Onazi

We saw 22 year old Super Eagles midfielder Michael Babatunde taken off in the second half of yesterday's game against Argentina with his arm in a cast but some of us didn't really know it was that serious. It kinda is. A scan after the match showed that he literally broke his arm after being hit by a fierce shot from Ogenyi Onazi. (see pic on the left). He's been ruled out of the 2014 World Cup.

Explosion reported in Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos

So wait, bomb blast in Adamawa, Abuja and now we are hearing about another one in Lagos on the same day? According to a LIB reader who claimed to have witnessed it and according to a breaking news report on Vanguard, a bomb-laden car went off at Folawiyo Fuel Depot close to a Petrol Tank Farm at Creek Road, Apapa, Lagos around 8.30 this evening. The eye-witness said the explosion came from a Benz car parked right beside a LPG tanker

The explosion is said to have affected four buildings including two banks. Four people are said to have lost their lives. Details later...(photo credit - Vanguard)

Francis Atuche, the former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB now Keystone Bank, who is standing trial for allegedly embezzling N25.7 billion from Bank PHB told Justice Lateefat Okunnu of an Ikeja High court today June 25th during cross examination that he's never stolen in his life as he is a devout Catholic.

Update on Emab Plaza bombing, 21 confirmed dead, 17 injured

The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, has confirmed that 21 people died this afternoon when a bomb went off at the very busy Emab Plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja. He also confirmed that 17 people were seriously injured and have been taken to Maitama District Hospital,  Gwarimpa hospital, Wuse hospital, Garki hospital and National hospital.

And now they've started bombing shopping malls? Dear Lord, help us! People who live in the area have reported an explosion at popular Emab Plaza on Aminu Kano Crescent in Wuse 2, Abuja, which happened just a few minutes ago around 4pm. Someone tweeted this pic above supposedly from the explosion. The explosion is said to have occurred at the gate of the very busy plaza and six people have been confirmed dead with at least 15 people injured...

Bomb blast hits Adamawa market

A bomb explosion has been reported at Kasuwan Kuturu market in Mubi Adamawa state.
 
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Commissioner of Police in Adamawa said the bomb was targeted at a police patrol team but there were no casualties from the explosion.
 
This explosion comes three weeks after a similar bomb explosion rocked a football viewing center in Mubi Adamawa killing 14 people. Details later

Doctors call for blood donation for Monday's Kano blast victims

Medical authorities have called for blood donation for victims of the Kano state bomb blast that happened on Monday June 23rd at the Kano School of Hygiene Gida Murtala road in Kano. 
 
Some of the victims who are currently receiving treatment at the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital are in dire need of blood, doctors say. Yesterday students of the Kano School of Hygiene were seen at the hospital coming to donate blood for their colleagues.
 
Pictured above is the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi II when he paid a visit to the victims at the hospital yesterday. Eight people died from the blast while 12 others suffered serious injuries.

Luiz Suarez facing 2-year ban as pictures emerge of him trying to bite same player a year ago

Pictures have emerged of Uruguayan and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez trying to bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini (left) 12 months before biting him again at their match last night in Brazil. The first incident happened during a Confederations Cup clash between Italy and Uruguay in 2013.

Meanwhile Suárez is reportedly now facing a two year ban. FIFA disciplinary committee said this morning that it had opened proceedings against him and has asked his team to present evidence later today. "Any type of proof may be produced, including reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings’. the committee said.

A decision on whether he is guilty of biting or not will be published before Saturday when Uruguay will play Colombia.

Man detained in mental institute in Kano for saying there is no God

Mubarak Bala has been held up at a mental institute in Kano state since June 13th despite being given a clean bill of health because he declared he does not believe in God. 
According to the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) Bala is being held against his will and forcibly medicated at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he has been kept since June 13.

MTN to introduce the most affordable smartphone ever!

Leading ICT Company, MTN Nigeria is set to redefine the digital landscape in Nigeria with the launch of new affordable smartphones. The company has perfected plans to launch a range of smartphones in the Nigerian market.

The phones will come with the latest android operating system and features. It is not yet clear how many models of the phones will be launched, but the prices will start below N8,000. And when it's launched, it will make it the most affordable smartphones in Nigeria and possibly Africa.

Boko Haram men this evening attacked a football viewing center in Damaturu, Yobe State during a live football match between Brazil and Mexico in the ongoing world cup in Brazil.

The sect men reportedly hauled explosives at the viewing center, injuring several people. Injured people were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Yobe state Police commissioner told AFP that they have deployed policemen to the scene and will give details on the incident later...

INEC declares Ayo Fayose winner Of Ekiti Governorship Election

Former Ekiti state governor and PDP flag-bearer, Ayo Fayose, has been declared winner of yesterday June 21st Governorship election in Ekiti state by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to results collated by INEC, Ayo Fayose pulled a total of 203, 090 number of votes to beat incumbent Governor and APC candidate, Kayode Fayemi, who scored 120, 433 while the candidate of the Labour Party, Bamidele Michael Opeyemi scored 18,135 votes to come third. Continue...

Egypt to Release Hunger Striking Al Jazeera Journalist

Earlier this year, BN reported that Nigerian-raised Egyptian Al Jazeera broadcast reporter, Abdullah El-Shamy, was arrested while covering the Egyptian military’s bloody crackdown on Muslim Brotherhood protesters in August, 2013 in Cairo. 
After almost a year of imprisonment without charge, El-Shamy will finally be set free soon, as Egypt’s prosecutor general has made the order for his release.

13 planes mysteriously vanish from radars in Europe for 25mins in 'unprecedented' incident

A total of 13 aircraft suddenly vanished off radars for about 25 minutes on two occasions while flying over Austria, it has been revealed.

In what is being billed as 'unprecedented' circumstances, the incidents on June 5 and yesterday saw the flight data disappear from air controller screens.

Austria's flight safety organisation admitted that the height, location and other information for a total of 13 aircraft mysteriously vanished from radars. It is believed that some of the planes were long-haul flights carrying passengers on board. Continue...

UNILAG produces youngest medical doctor...graduates at 21

21 year-old Maryam Opeyemi Raji (pictured above) has emerged the youngest graduating medical student at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, during 2012/13 academic session.

Parents, family and friends gathered on Wednesday, June 11 to celebrate her success story. Speaking on how she did it, Maryam said;
"It was my dad's dream I become a medical doctor. Unfortunately I lost him at age 8. People around me, especially my mum, nurtured the dream. She helped me keep the goal, it was very challenging but having her around kept me focused. Luckily for me, I finished my secondary education at an early age, and at 15, I gained admission to study medicine at the University of Lagos. Here I am today, I am being celebrated as the youngest medical student."
21 year old doctor? That's major. Congrats to her...

Baby allegedly dies in church after dedication

A witness to the sad incident sent me the story...but I am going to leave out the name of the church and the pastor who dedicated the baby, because I haven't been able to verify the authenticity of the story, but the person who sent it to me swears this happened. Her story below...
"The story is about a couple who attends a church around the IPO axis in Lagos. The name of the Church is (name withheld) opposite the MTN mast in Baruwa around Ipaja area of Lagos State. The Pastor whose name is (name withheld) dedicated a baby on sunday 1st June, 2014 and the baby (pictured above) died right there in the church.

Boko Haram attacks Church: 12 worshippers, 6 militants killed in Borno

About 100 members of  Boko Haram around 9.30pm yesterday June 1st attacked the EYN Church (Church of Brethren, Nigeria) at Attagara village in Gwoza LGA of Borno state killing 12 of the worshipers in the church.
According to Sahara Reporters, a senior security official confirmed the incident saying the men armed with guns stormed the church and opened fire on the worshipers. The source said the community members quickly mobilized and engaged the sect men in a battle which led to the death of 6 of the Boko Haram men.

FCT Police Commissioner bans #BringBackOurGirls protest in Abuja

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Joseph Mbu has banned all forms of the #BringBackOurGirls protest in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the ban was issued today June 2nd. Various groups have had demonstrations in Abuja in the last few weeks over the missing Chibok girls who were abducted on April 14th.
