Doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients dies from the virus

The Sierra Leonean doctor who treated more than 100 Ebola patients has also died. Dr Sheik Umar Khan (pictured above), who was hailed as a national hero for disregarding his own health and helping sick patients, died today July 29th from the disease after being diagnosed with the virus last week. He contacted the virus despite wearing protective gear when treating patients.

In an interview last month, the 39yr old doctor had expressed fears for his life because of his constant contact with Ebola patients.

Looks like presidency may have given money to Chibok parents

There are reports that the presidency gave Chibok parents N100million after they met with him last week, a report that they've since denied. But from this tweet above from #bringbackourgirls convener, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, it looks like it may be true.
So the money was given to them for what? Is it okay to give them money?

Early this morning July 29th, a man was found dead head down inside a well (pictured above) with his slippers beside the well in a house at Akanyn street, Shibiri Rd, Ilemba in Ojo, Ajangbadi, Lagos.

Many residents of the house had fetched water from the well and even made use of the water before someone discovered there was a corpse inside it. When he was eventually pulled from the well, he was recognized as someone who lived around..a carpenter whose wife recently left him. Some people claimed to have seen him the previous day, very drunk. No one knew how he fell into the well.

A source told LIB that the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ojo division and Ajangbadi police were contacted and they came to remove the corpse and took it away for fuurther investigation. See the exclusive graphic pic after the cut...

Boko Haram kills 8, bombs bridge in Yobe

8 people were killed and a major bridge destroyed after suspected members of the Boko Haram sect yesterday night July 28th launched an attack in Katarko town in Yobe State. Katarko is 22km South of Damaturu, the state capital and is said to be very near the dreaded Sambisa forest.

According to reports, the sect members arrived the village around 7.30pm in motorbikes and operated unhindered till 2.00am. The men had unsuccessful attacked a military base in the town before moving into a residential area. Continue..

El Rufai's son Hamza El Rufai died this morning in a fatal accident. Here are pics from the accident scene. Hamza was driving the black Lexus car (pictured above) when he ran into a stationery blue colored Volkswagen Saloon car around the Ningi Barrack along A.Y.A - Kubwa road aroudn  5.30am this morning July 29th.

Two persons were involved in the crash but only Hamza died. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, his corpse was taken to the national mosque by his parents while the crashed vehicles were deposited at the Maitama Police station. We have insiders in commercial banks' suspected fraudsters confess

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested three suspected fraudsters identified as Kola Osho, Oyedepo Adesola and Kola Ademola, who allegedly specialize in withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts using dud cheques. 
 
According to Punch, the police said the suspects usually obtained the cheques from people who are experts in stealing cheque books from unsuspecting people, then they will present the cheques to their insider in the bank, who will dubiously verify the account holder and the signature before the money could be paid out. Nigerian ambassador, 3 ECOWAS staff, 55 others had contact with Lagos Ebola victim

59 people including the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Chigozie Obi Nnadozie are said to have had direct and indirect contact with the late Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, who died on Friday July 25th from the Ebola Virus in Lagos. 

At a Joint Ministerial Press briefing of the Lagos State Ministry of Health and Federal Ministry of Health on development concerning the disease yesterday July 28th, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr Jide Idris said out of the 59 people who had contact with the late Patrick Sawyer, 44 were hospital contacts (38 healthcare workers & 6 laboratory staff) and 15 Airport contacts comprising 3 ECOWAS staff-driver, Liaison, and Protocol officers, Nigerian Ambassador to Monrovia, two nursing staff and five Airport passenger handlers. Continue...

Oh no! Nigerian weightlifting Gold medalist fails doping test at Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation this morning July 29th said Nigerian female weightlifting gold medalist Chika Amalaha has failed a doping test.
CGF chief executive Mike Hooper said Amalaha, 17, tested positive for diuretics and masking agents after winning gold in the 53-kilogram (117-pound) division last Friday July 25th.
The backup "B'' sample will be tested tomorrow Wednesday July 30th.

Hamza El Rufai, one of the sons of the former Minister of the FCT & Chieftain of the APC, Nasir El Rufai died this morning July 29th in a car accident. His father took to his Facebook page to announce his passing on. Such a young man. Too sad! May his soul rest in peace.. Amen

Rihanna causes an uproar by touching the World Cup trophy

Rihanna caused an international incident yesterday after she was photographed holding the 2014 World Cup trophy. After the final match , Rihanna posted several pics on her twitter page showing her celebrating with the German team while clutching the World Cup trophy.

Problem is, FIFA guidelines state only winners of the tournament and Heads of State are allowed to handle the official World Cup Trophy and Badgal RiRi is neither...but who cares? Not Rihanna. Malala Yousafzai meets President Jonathan

Girl-child education advocate, Malala Yousafzai, accompanied by her dad, met with Pres. Jonathan Yesterday Monday July 14 at the State House. Speaking during the meeting, president Jonathan said;
“I personally believe that since about 50 per cent of our population are female, we will be depriving ourselves of half of our available human resources if we fail to educate our girls adequately or suppress their ambitions in any way. We are therefore taking steps to curb all forms of discrimination against girls and women, and have also undertaken many affirmative actions on their behalf" he stated. Horrific pics emerge of 25 women who were slaughtered in Baghdad after being branded prostitutes

Horrific pictures have emerged showing the bodies of some of the 25 women murdered in a raid on a Baghdad brothel. Gunmen wearing camouflage and carrying weapons fitted with silencers reportedly burst into two apartments in they city's Zayouna district on Saturday evening before massacring everyone inside.

Police arrived at the building to find blood streaming down the stairs. Inside they discovered the bodies of dozens of women scattered around two apartments. Continue...

Nassarawa lawmakers begin impeachment proceedings against the Governor

Nassarawa State House of Assembly members have commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor of the state, Umaru Al-Makura.

At its plenary session this morning, the Speaker of the House, Ahmed Mohammed, directed its clerk, Ego Maikeffi to issue a 16-count charge impeachment notice, signed by 20 of the 24 lawmakers, to the governor for alleged gross misconduct, extra-budgetary expenses and  misappropriation of funds.

Nasarawa has 20 PDP, lawmakers and four APC, lawmakers. The governor is a member of the APC.

Rapper Ruggedman becomes an International Peace Ambassador

Ruggedman has joined the Elite list of International Ambassadors for peace. Inspiring youths, giving hope to the needy, empowering women are other attributes of the star rapper that most do not know.

For over 2 years, Michael Ugochukwu Stephens aka Ruggedman, has volunteered in various national community projects across Nigeria and the diaspora especially through the ambassadors in action program earning him a nomination for an International Peace Ambassador by the Youth federation for world peace. An organisation in consultative status with the UN.

Through his new appointment Ruggedman will be attending meetings at the United Nations, lobbying world leaders and using his influence and fame to promote a culture of peace. Other celebrities to be inducted on the night includes Davido, Skales and more.

Rwandan president welcomes Davido at airport as he performs to 60k fans

On July 4th, Rwandans celebrated their annual Liberation Day celebrations at Amahoro national stadium in Kigali. Davido was the headline act for this year and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda welcomed the BET winner with his wife and children at the airport. Nurse fired for filming Neymar in hospital

The nurse who filmed Brazilian striker Neyma being wheeled around on a hospital trolley has been fired, according to an article on Brazilan football site UOL.

The nurse has been criticized for not only recording the football star in that state but also for blowing kisses to the camera afterwards and laughing. She then posted the video to her Facebook page. Personally, I don't see how this is a big deal but the hospital management released a statement saying the nurse, named Chintia, has been fired.

Boko Haram reportedly recaptures 45 out of 63 that escaped from them

They escaped last week and they've already been recaptured? Makes no sense to me but according to new reports, 45 out of the 63 women and children who reportedly escaped from Boko Haram men on Saturday July 5th have been re-abducted by the sect men.

Vanguard reports that a member of the Chibok Vigilante Group, Abbas Gaya in a telephone interview confirmed the recapturing of the women who fled the Boko Haram camp when the men attacked a military base at Damboa village in Borno state

“It is very unfortunate and shocking to tell you today (yesterday) that 45 of the 63 escaped women and children were kidnapped again on Sunday night, leaving only 18 that ran into this forests.” he said
Nah, nah, nah! Not buying this...sounds too weird. 

Nigerian troops clear terrorists bases in Balmo forest: capture foreign mercenaries

The Nigerian military released a statement on their website today saying that they have cleared and taken over terrorists bases in Borno state and also captured mercenaries. Read the statement below
Troops have cleared and taken over Balmo forest in a military operation that lasted throughout the weekend.  Prior to the operation, Balmo forest stretching from Bauchi through Jigawa States with links to the fringes of Sambisa forest was used by terrorists as bases and hideouts for launching attacks.
Terrorists and armed gangs operating in the forests were completely rooted out while some were captured during the operation.  Among those captured were two foreigners who are suspected to be mercenaries. Also captured are several weapons and equipment including power generating sets, communication equipment, vehicles, motorcycles, foodstuff and kitchen utensils. EFCC arraigns 3 suspected impostors for N141.7m securities scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday July 7, 2014 arraigned three suspects: Mohammed Rabiu (65 centre), Raphael Olorunfemi Okomoda (50 - left) and Adegbesan Theophilus (38 -right); before Justice Lawal Akapo of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja on different criminal counts, all bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false presence, stealing, impersonation, forgery, using false document and money laundering. While Lawan was charged with 19-counts, Okomoda and Theophilus were charged with 7-counts each. Continue...

D'banj presents Bono with over 2million Do Agric Petition signatures

In January 2014 during the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, D'banj helped launch the Do Agric Petition. A petition that calls on leaders for more and better investment in Agriculture. D'banj was the first to publicly sign the petition.

In April, he led 19 of Africa's top artists to record the hit song "Cocoa Na Chocolate" to promote the petition and help rebrand Agriculture among Africa's youth. 

The campaign has been a great success as over 2 million Africans from every African country has signed the petition.

D'banj recently met with ONE co-founder Bono and presented him the petition in recognition of the way he has inspired Africans themselves to lead the fight for change in Africa.

Polytechnic students take over Abuja Expressway in Owo to protest tuition fee

Some students of Ondo State owned Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, Ondo state this morning July 7th took over the Owo/Abuja expressway to protest the recent hike in their school fees.

Management of the school recently increased the annual school fees of students of National Diploma in sciences from ₦21,300 to N58,300 and ND students from ₦53,800 to 73,000. A levy of N20,000 was also imposed on non-indegenes of the state by school management.

2014 World Cup: Enyeama, other players get $130,000 each

According to reports, Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and a few other players received $130,000 ( N21 million) each as appearance fee for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“It was not a flat rate, but some of the players like Enyeama, who were involved in both the qualifiers as well as the World Cup in Brazil got as much as $130,000,” an official told AfricanFootball.com.

Bank manager found hanging in uncompleted building 3 weeks after he went missing

The body of Habib Olatunde (pictured above), a bank manager of an undisclosed Nigerian bank, has been found two weeks and six days after he was declared missing by the police. Late Mr Olatunde's body was found hanging in an uncompleted building at Arepo in Ogun state on Saturday July 5th around 5pm. Abayomi Shogunle, the Deputy Force PRO, Nigeria Police Force, revealed this.

Imo police arrests 25 undergraduate cult students, parades them

The Imo state Police command yesterday July 6th paraded 25 suspected and prospective cult members of some polytechnics in Imo state, including the Alvan Ikoku College of Education and Imo state Polytechnic.

The Police acting on a tip off from residents of Emi village in Owerri North local government area stormed the Emi river at about 3.30am when initiation process for new members was being carried out. The young men were arrested after a gun battle with the police. Marijuana, weapons and all manner of charms were found with them. Continue...

Jude Okoye and fiancee Ifeoma Umeokeke set to wed July 17th

P-Square's older brother and manager, Jude Okoye, and his fiancee MBGN Tourism 2012 Ifeoma Umeokeke, who got engaged on April 24th after dating for a few months, have picked July 17th for their traditional wedding. The wedding will hold at the bride's home town in Nnewi, Anambra state. Their white wedding will hold after Ifeoma, who is said to be pregnant, gives birth. Congrats to them.

63 abducted Borno women reportedly escape from Boko Haram

63 women out of 70 women who were reported to have been abducted by Boko Haram men in Borno state between June 12th - June 14th have regained their freedom. Reports by government sources as well as members of the Borno state vigilante group confirmed their escape.

An official of the Borno state vigilante group, Abbas Gava while confirming the escape to journalists in Borno, said the women made the bold move to escape yesterday Saturday July 5th while the sect men were attacking a military base in Damboa. Continue...
